Two historical markers have been installed at McCreery Park to honor the legacy of Dr. D. Lesesne Smith and his Infants’ and Children’s Sanitarium, which opened in Saluda in 1914. Dr. Smith went on to establish the Southern Pediatric Seminar in 1921 and also supervised the Spartanburg Baby Hospital.
Spearheaded by Billy Shand, this project began under the Historic Saluda Committee and was brought to completion by Historic Saluda, Inc. Funding was generously provided by the Smith family, Historic Saluda, Inc., and other private donors.
A special thank you to the City of Saluda for installing the markers at McCreery Park! We are grateful to everyone who helped make this tribute to Saluda’s history possible.
