Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary (2017). Directed by John Scheinfeld. 1 hr. 39 min., documentary, NR; and a three-day youth jazz residency with JazzReach, February 24–26, 2027

In celebration of John Coltrane’s 100th birthday, the North Carolina Museum of Art brings his legacy home with events that celebrate his impact. Born in Hamlet and raised in High Point, Coltrane remains one of North Carolina’s most influential cultural figures and a transformative force in American music and global jazz.

We start with a screening of Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary on September 23 and round out the celebration with a three-day youth jazz residency with JazzReach, February 24–26, 2027. The documentary is an exploration of the global power and impact of the music of Coltrane in which the passions, experiences, and forces that shaped his life and revolutionary sounds are revealed. Watch the trailer here.

Through partnerships with area schools, the JazzReach residency introduces the next generation to Coltrane’s music, creativity, and spirit of exploration. Knightdale High School’s Jazz Band takes that legacy a step further, performing alongside JazzReach’s acclaimed Metta Quintet in a culminating concert. Together, these experiences connect North Carolina musical heritage to young people discovering their own voices as artists and musicians. Save the dates: February 24–26, 2027.
